So this morning I did an Instagram live on oral care and essential oils, more specifically about how I treated a mouth ulcer naturally. So I thought I’d write down a few of my experiences and thoughts on the matter.

Essential Oil Safety
Before I start though, I do want to make a point of asking you to consider the quality of essential oils you are using. I wouldn’t put just any old essential oil in my mouth – or the mouth of my baby – without knowing their purity. This matters a lot to me, and that is why I personally use doTERRA. They are proven to be the purest essential oils on the market which means they work effectively, they are safe to ingest and they wont fill our bodies with toxins (yes, lower grade essential oils are toxic). But this is a matter which needs a whole other blog post.
So I woke up one morning a few days ago with a sharp pain inside my mouth, just under my lip. When I inspected it in the mirror I was met with a big ugly mouth ulcer. Now, I read that ulcers like this can be a sign of bacterial conditions in the body (not the only reason, but made sense in my case), so I knew the oils I would be needing:
Tea Tree
I used Tea Tree (Melaleuca) essential oil topically on my ulcer by pressing my finger on the top of the bottle and then holding it to the effected area. It had a slight numbing sensation because I used it undiluted - which was great – but if you are not confident in your body’s responses to undiluted oil, I would definitely dilute before applying.
Tea Tree is known for its antibacterial and cleansing behaviour. The Australian Aborigines used to scrunch up the leaves of this plant and inhale it or apply it to wounds as a natural healer. Today, there are many toothpastes and mouth washes with Tea Tree in them, so it’s safe to say it’s a great tool for natural oral care.
OnGuard ®
This oil is doTERRA’s protective blend made up of spice, leaf and citrus oils which can be amazing for immune health and antibacterial behaviour. What I loved about this oil blend was that it contained Clove. Throughout history, before man-made local anaesthetics and numbing agents, chewing on clove before dental work was done not only numbed the mouth but also worked as a natural antiseptic.
I applied this oil undiluted – again, I would recommend dilution if you have never used these oils orally before – by pressing my finger to the essential oil bottle and then onto my ulcer. It worked to numb the effected area and gave me much needed relief. I also know this oil was working to support my body in the cleansing and healing process.
How to get your hands on these oils
Both these oils are found in doTERRA’s most popular essential oil starter kit. Or you can choose to purchase them individually. CLICK HERE if you would like to purchase them at wholesale price. By purchasing through me you will gain access to constant oil support and education where you will learn how to use oils safely and effectively.
